During the month of June 1944, coinciding with the fall of Rome and the allied landing in Normandy, there was in the Ossola region one of the largest German-Fascist raids against partisan forces. In the period from 12. June 1944 to 23. June 1944, approximately 4200 soldiers operated in the impervious region of the Val Grande. The result was for size of deaths considerable. It is estimated that about 200 partisans were killed in less than two weeks.
Raphael Rues had in 1998 retraced what happened during this raking for an Italian television. On youtube is available, unfortunately only in Italian, the documentary in its entirety. A modest contribution in providing even more details to what were the German and Fascist operations in this region, during this tragic raking.
